So, Brixton has its own currency — and for the first time, you can head to the neighbourhood to withdraw Brixton pounds from a cash point in Market Row. The new scheme is being funded through Mayor London’s High Street Fund, and is one of many project intended to boost business in Brixton’s town centre.
Said Brixton Pound (B£) managing director Tom Shakhli (via Brixton Blog):
Our cash machine is the latest in our challenge to the conventional view that we’re moving towards a cashless society, and gives locals and visitors to Brixton an opportunity to experiment with money that celebrates community and creates conversations rather than closes them off.
So, the two biggest questions one would ask:
Where can I spend my Brixton Pounds? B£ notes (which feature some interesting faces, including David Bowie, Violette Szabo and Luol Deng) can be used at more than 300 independent business in the area. We presume that there will be some signage to avoid/reduce any confusion.
Where is that cash machine exactly? Between Coldharbour Lane, Atlantic Road and Electric Avenue. As far as when, you can use it during Brixton Market’s operating hours (8AM-11:30PM Tuesday to Sunday, 8AM-6PM on Mondays).
