For certain presumed reasons, BBC’s English-language website has been blocked across China in an act of “deliberate censorship”. The reason for the blackout is unclear, although the website — as well as BBC World TV — tends to experience blackouts when reporting Chinese stories.
As said by BBC’s Global News director Peter Horrocks:
The BBC provides impartial, trusted news to millions of people around the world, and attempts to censor our news services show just how important it is to get our accurate information to them.
BBC’s English-language website was last blacked during coverage of activist Chen Guangcheng’s house arrest escape a couple of years ago. Aside from that, it’s remained mostly uninterrupted since the 2008 Beijing Olympics (we cannot say the say for BBC’s Chinese-language site, which has been heavily censored since its launch).
