This year’s Hip-Hop Music Awards has officially gone down in the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center. In addition to the plenty of photos (below), here’s a few things that went down:
This year’s awards was hosted by Snoop Dogg, who apparently kept the audience laughing with plenty of jokes and skits, including one where he brought his GGN series to the stage (a rumour or two stands that Love & Hip-Hop star Joseline Hernandez didn’t take too well to many of the jokes in her direction);
Brandy surprised the crowd by taking the stage to perform the classic ‘I Wanna Be Down’ remix on its 20th anniversary, complete with features Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and Yo-Yo;
Doug E. Fresh was presented with the I Am Hip-Hop Award (and rightfully so); he also performed the track ‘La Di Da Di’ with Snoop Dogg;
The cyphers, obviously, although none of them held a candle to their predecessors;
Common and Vince Staples hit the stage to perform their collaboration ‘Kingdom’; taking that a huge couple of steps further, Jay Electronica came on stage for an apparent remix to the song, climaxed by the appearance of the parents of Mike Brown, who was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, MO. (UPDATE: Video available here)
Other performers included T.I., Rich Homie Quan, Young Thug, Birdman (who’s current gyal Keyshia was also in the building as a presenter), Migos and Rae Sremmurd. The awards show officially airs on BET (in the States, anyway) 14th October.
