Over the weekend, Spike Lee celebrated the 25th anniversary of the iconic film Do The Right Thing by throwing a big block party in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn (where the movie was filmed). Among the party’s guests were Public Enemy, Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), Erykah Badu, Wesley Snipes and Dave Chappelle, who was closing out his own string of shows at Radio City Music Hall.
Another surprising “guest” was President Barack Obama, who — along with First Lady Michelle — appeared in a video helping to commemorate the occasion (he apparently played Do The Right Thing on his and his wife’s first date, which is pretty cool for Spike Lee to have heard, I’m sure).
Following the festivities, the now-historical block on Stuyvesant Avenue (between Lexington Avenue and Quincy Street) was also renamed Do The Right Thing Way. While the movie’s title is what it is, I’m sure they could have picked a better name, but hey….
Check out pictures from the event above, as well as some clips (from The Urban Daily and various Instagrammers) below.
UPDATE: Gabrielle Smith and her entity The:nublk also hosted their own 25th year anniversary for Do The Right Thing, which went down in Hackney and featured many of London and the UK’s brightest. You can check that recap out below as well.
